April 14th, 11:30-12:00: Human Rights in Focus: What New EU Legislation Means for the Cosmetics Industry presented by Milena Stamova, AAK Global Sustainability Manager – Legal & Compliance
Abstract: Amid rising concern over modern slavery - impacting millions worldwide - the cosmetics industry faces growing scrutiny due to complex supply chains and demands for ethical transparency. Consumers increasingly expect brands to offer ethically sourced products. New EU legislation introduces stricter human rights due diligence and obligations on forced labor. This presentation outlines forthcoming requirements, identifies affected companies, and explores the evolving corporate reporting landscape. We address compliance challenges for producers with limited supply chain control and share practical strategies to navigate these changes - helping personal care brands stay ahead in a market where ethics drive success.
April 15th, 10:00-10:30: Does Certification Drive Meaningful Impact for Smallholders and Brands? presented by Jakob Nybroe, AAK Sustainability Manager, West Africa and Lisette Townsend, Global Business Development & Marketing Director, AAK Personal Care
Abstract: While certification boosts trust, transparency, and brand differentiation, it can also impose extra demands on those upstream. Using AAK’s long-established and award-winning Kolo Nafaso program – which empowers hundreds of thousands of women shea collectors in West Africa – as a case study, this presentation explores the challenges of certifying non-agricultural crops at scale while preserving core values. It explains the rationale for choosing FairWild as a certification partner and highlights the importance of developing sourcing strategies that go beyond a tick-box compliance exercise for downstream stakeholders to deliver real measurable impact on the ground.
Technical Seminar
April 15th, 11:30-12:00: Minimizing post-processing viscosity changes in oil-in-water emulsions formulated with high shea content presented by Mahmoud Shallah, Formulation & Application Manager, AAK Personal Care
Abstract: Crystallization within oil-in-water emulsions can destabilize shea-based formulations, driving unpredictable viscosity shifts, yet the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. This presentation explores how crystallization, droplet-size evolution, and viscosity interact in emulsions formulated with refined shea butter versus liquid shea. Results from a twelve-month study using advanced physicochemical analyses show that post-processing conditions play a more critical role than factory cooling, and that liquid shea can significantly reduce viscosity changes and instability. Attendees will gain valuable insights to help them consistently produce stable emulsions with high shea content, reliable product performance, and improved consumer satisfaction.
