LIPEX® 205

A versatile, low-spreading, liquid butter, Lipex 205 can be used in formulations at higher levels than standard refined shea butter without the risk of crystallization. Made from FairWild™ certified mass balance shea kernels, it offers good stability and is suitable for low energy processing.

A controlled laboratory-scale trial showed that liquid shea saves up to 50% energy and takes 30% less time in production compared to solid shea butter.

The study compared hot processing of a body lotion made with 6% solid shea butter and low-temperature processing of the same formulation using 6% liquid shea. A sensory evaluation triangle test confirmed there were no significant differences between the two final formulations.

Features and benefits

  • Lipex 205 is made from FairWild™ certified mass balance shea kernels. This means certified kernels from the Kolo Nafaso direct sourcing program are mixed with non-certified kernels during processing. A mass balance model allows customers to support the program without limiting supply chain requirements.
  • Lipex 205 contains a higher concentration of bioactive triterpene esters compared to refined shea butter. Triterpene esters, minor compounds naturally found in shea butter, are known for their skin-regenerating and protective properties. While refined shea butter typically contains 2-6% triterpene esters, all our AAK liquid
shea butter variants offer an enhanced content of 9.5-11.5%.
  • Liquid shea expands the possibilities for innovative formulations, allowing the creation of light, fluid, and playful textures with minimal INCI lists—perfect for aligning with the clean beauty trend.
  • The liquid, pumpable format results in more efficient production. Lipex 205 can be incorporated easily into formulations, and enables low temperature processing, leading to energy and time savings. Our studies have shown that emulsions made with liquid shea butter maintain consistent viscosity, regardless of storage temperature, ensuring reliable dispensing across packaging formats and delivering the same sensory experience every time.
