Mastering Stability in Anhydrous Formulations
Anhydrous balms, sticks and solid bars are gaining market momentum, driven by demand for concentrated, water-free formats and reduced reliance on preservatives. For formulators, however, their apparent simplicity can hide complex stability risks. Texture shifts, bloom, graininess and separation may only appear after scale-up or weeks in storage — and are often blamed on the formulation when the real cause could be in the ingredient behavior, processing conditions or storage history.
Key takeaways:
- Why ingredients with the same INCI name can behave very differently
- How melting profile, polarity and molecular structure guide ingredient selection
- How filling temperature, cooling rate and storage conditions determine final texture
- Why documenting a full time–temperature profile helps de-risk scale-up and support root cause analysis
- How to select butters based on functional behavior — not label information alone
